Originally built in 1888, The Princess Theatre is Queensland's oldest surviving theatre and one of Brisbane's most treasured cultural landmarks. Following an extensive restoration, the heritage-listed building has been reimagined as a vibrant contemporary performance and events venue.
Working alongside architects JDA Co., Sophie Hart Studio played a key role in shaping the interiors, developing a colour palette sympathetic to the building's heritage while introducing a fresh, sophisticated and playful aesthetic. From selecting carpets, flooring and decorative tiles to sourcing feature lighting and furniture, each element was carefully considered to complement the theatre's architectural character.
The studio's involvement extended to the outdoor courtyard and interior greenery, helping create a cohesive experience throughout the venue. The result is a distinctive blend of heritage charm and contemporary design, celebrating the theatre's rich history while welcoming a new generation of performers and audiences.
The Princess Theatre's restoration was recognised with a prestigious Gold accolade at the 2022 Australian Good Design Awards, celebrating the project's thoughtful approach to heritage conservation and contemporary design.
