Perched on a secluded headland overlooking the Great Barrier Reef, The House at Lizard Island is an extraordinary private retreat where contemporary architecture meets the raw beauty of its natural surroundings.

Designed by JDA Co., the residence embraces a refined sense of barefoot luxury, with a palette inspired by the island's rugged landscape and turquoise waters.

Sophie Hart Studio was engaged to curate the furnishings, fabrics, art, objects and final styling, bringing warmth, texture and personality to the interiors. The studio's involvement extended to almost every detail of the guest experience, from bespoke furniture, rugs and bedding to tableware, books, amenities and branded merchandise. Each element was thoughtfully selected to complement the architecture and its spectacular setting, creating a relaxed yet sophisticated sanctuary that feels intrinsically connected to the island.

Rather than drawing inspiration from the ocean, Sophie Hart Studio looked to the island's rugged landscape to inform the interior palette, allowing the spectacular sea views to become the artwork beyond.

The vision was to create interiors that felt grounded and inviting, with playful touches that balance the comfort of a private holiday home with the sophistication of a luxury retreat.

Responding to the island's harsh tropical environment, durable outdoor fabrics and marine-grade fittings were carefully selected to withstand the elements without compromising on comfort or aesthetic.

The interiors were conceived with two distinct moods: relaxed, barefoot living downstairs and a more sophisticated, resort-style atmosphere upstairs. Sophie Hart Studio brought this vision to life through carefully curated furnishings, bespoke furniture, commissioned artworks and thoughtful finishing details, creating a seamless balance between the comforts of a private holiday home and the experience of a luxury retreat.
